The idea behind laughter yoga is for people to gather together for the sole purpose of laughing. It is non-religious, non-political and it has nothing to do with traditional yoga, but has everything to do with laughter.
It started in 1995, in India by Dr Madan Kataria who was writing an article about laughter for a health journal. He discovered the many proven benefits of laughter on the mind and body and started a laughter club which spread across India and soon found its way to the west.
It is performed in a group combining unconditional laughter and yogic breathing by using special laughter techniques. This promotes natural laughter without involving cognitive thought. Anyone can laugh for no reason without relying on humour, jokes or comedy and you certainly feel the benefits on the very first session!
